How to Spend a Layover in Dubai: The Perfect 1–3 Day Stopover
If your international flight connects through Dubai, don't automatically treat it like somewhere you should simply change planes.
Dubai is one of those cities that works incredibly well as a stopover.
You can experience the Burj Khalifa, see the desert, spend an afternoon at an incredible rooftop pool, eat somewhere with skyline views, and still continue on to your main destination without turning Dubai into a separate week-long vacation.
We added Dubai to the end of a Thailand trip, and I think two to three days is a great amount of time for a first visit if you mainly want to experience the highlights.
Here's how I would plan it depending on how long your layover or stopover is.
If You Have One Night in Dubai
If you arrive in the afternoon or early evening, don't try to see the entire city.
Check into your hotel, clean up, and head straight for Downtown Dubai.
This is where you'll find:
Burj Khalifa
Dubai Mall
Dubai Fountain
Plenty of restaurants
Seeing Burj Khalifa lit up at night immediately gives you that I'm actually in Dubai feeling.
The Dubai Fountain currently runs evening performances every 30 minutes from 6 PM until 11 PM, making it an easy attraction to work around dinner.
Then get some sleep and continue your trip the next morning.
If You Have One Full Day: Downtown Dubai + The Palm
With one full day, I'd focus on two areas rather than trying to cross the city over and over again.
Start at Burj Khalifa
Book At the Top at Burj Khalifa for the morning.
The standard observation experience visits Levels 124 and 125, while premium options go higher.
I like doing this earlier in the day so you can experience the view without using your prime sunset hours.
Add Sky Views Observatory
If you love skyline views, Sky Views Observatory is another option nearby.
It sits more than 200 meters above Downtown Dubai and gives you a different perspective of the skyline — including an amazing view of Burj Khalifa rather than from inside it.
You don't necessarily need to do every observation deck in Dubai, but if you're trying to fit the city's biggest sights into a short stopover, they're easy to combine geographically.
Spend the Afternoon at AURA Skypool
For something completely different, spend your afternoon at AURA Skypool.
AURA is located on Palm Jumeirah and is known for its 360-degree infinity pool and skyline views.
This is one of those experiences I would reserve in advance rather than hoping for availability when you arrive.
It also gives you something I think every short stopover needs: downtime.
You don't want your entire day to feel like racing from attraction to attraction.
Finish With the Dubai Fountain
Head back Downtown for dinner and the Dubai Fountain.
The public viewing areas are free, or you can pay to access the fountain boardwalk or take an abra ride on Burj Lake.
It's an easy way to finish your main sightseeing day.
If You Have Two Full Days: Add a Desert Safari
If you can extend your layover into a two-day stopover, this is where Dubai becomes much more worthwhile.
Use one day for the city's modern attractions and dedicate your second afternoon to the desert.
Our itinerary used a roughly 2:30 PM departure for a desert safari that continued into the evening.
Depending on the tour you book, desert experiences can include things like:
Dune driving
Sandboarding
Camel rides
Sunset stops
Dinner
Evening entertainment
For me, this is important because otherwise a short Dubai trip can become entirely skyscrapers, malls, and luxury hotels.
Getting outside the city gives you a completely different environment.
I would purposely keep the morning relaxed — sleep in, have breakfast, enjoy your hotel pool, and then head out for the safari in the afternoon.
If You Have Three Days: Add Old Dubai
If you have another half or full day, use it to see a side of Dubai that feels very different from Downtown and Palm Jumeirah.
Spend time around Dubai Creek and Al Seef, explore Old Dubai, visit the souks, and take an abra across the creek.
You could also add:
Dubai Frame
Museum experiences
Miracle Garden when in season
Another beach or pool club
The View at The Palm
Our original planning list included Old Dubai, Dubai Creek, Dubai Frame, Miracle Garden, beach clubs, and The View at The Palm as possible additions if we had more time.
Where to Stay During a Dubai Stopover
For a short trip, location matters.
You don't want to spend half your layover crossing Dubai in taxis.
We stayed at InterContinental Residences Dubai Business Bay, which worked well with a trip focused heavily on Downtown Dubai.
For a first-time visitor, I would generally look around:
Downtown Dubai / Business Bay: Best for Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and the fountains.
Palm Jumeirah: Best if your hotel, beach, and resort experience are a major part of the trip.
Dubai Marina: Good for restaurants, waterfront atmosphere, and easier access to the beach side of the city.
For a very short stopover, I'd choose the area closest to the majority of your plans rather than simply choosing the hotel you like most.
How Long of a Dubai Layover Is Worth Leaving the Airport?
There's a major difference between a true airport layover and a stopover.
If you only have a few hours between flights, I wouldn't automatically leave the airport. You need to factor in immigration, transportation, returning to the airport, security, and the recommended check-in time for your next international flight.
But if your schedule gives you an overnight stay or at least one full day, Dubai becomes much easier to experience.
And if you can build in two full days, even better.
That's enough time to experience both the modern city and the desert without turning your stopover into another exhausting multi-day itinerary.
My Ideal Two-Day Dubai Stopover
If I had to narrow everything down, I'd do:
Day 1: Arrive → check into hotel → relaxed evening
Day 2: Burj Khalifa → Sky Views → lunch → AURA Skypool → Dubai Fountain at night
Day 3: Relaxed morning → desert safari → dinner in the desert
Next morning: Fly home or continue to your next destination
That gives you skyscrapers, incredible views, pool time, the desert, and a little relaxation.
And that's exactly why I think Dubai works so well as a stopover.
You don't necessarily need an entire vacation dedicated to it to experience some of the city's biggest highlights.
