How to Find the Best Area to Stay When Visiting Somewhere New
Choosing the right area to stay can have a huge impact on your trip. A beautiful hotel is great, but if it’s far from everything you want to do, you may end up spending a lot of extra time and money getting around.
I always start by looking at the main activities, attractions, restaurants, and neighborhoods I’m interested in visiting, then I try to find an area that puts me relatively close to most of them. You don’t need to stay directly next to every attraction, but being centrally located can make your days feel much easier and more flexible. This is why doing research on a destination prior to booking is so important!
I also pay close attention to the neighborhood itself. I want somewhere that feels safe, walkable, and enjoyable to come back to at the end of the day. Ideally, there are restaurants, cafés, shops, or bars nearby so you can easily grab breakfast, go out for dinner, or wander around without needing transportation every time you leave the hotel.
The most central area is not always the best choice either. Sometimes staying just outside the busiest tourist zone gives you a better atmosphere, more local restaurants, and a quieter place to relax while still keeping you close to everything.
Before booking, I also recommend checking how easy it is to get around from that neighborhood. Look at travel times to the airport, main attractions, train stations, or any day trips you have planned. I have literally canceled excursions while on vacation because the drive to where we needed to get to was making me car sick!
There are definitely times when I’ll book a hotel even if it’s not in the most central or convenient area. Usually, if I’m planning a trip around a specific hotel, it’s because the property itself is part of the experience. In those cases, I’m probably not planning to leave very often anyway, so location matters a lot less. For special resorts, unique stays, or hotels with amazing pools, restaurants, views, or activities, I’m happy to sacrifice a central location if the hotel is worth it.
The goal is to find the best balance between convenience, safety, and atmosphere. You want an area that makes sightseeing easy but also feels like somewhere you’ll actually enjoy spending time. Make sure you spend time reading reviews of the hotel or rental to see what people say about the surrounding area and how close/far it is from the main things to do.
