5 Trips Worth Taking Before You Have Kids

There are certain trips that are especially fun to experience when you have the freedom to travel entirely on your own schedule.

That's not to say you can't visit these destinations with children. Plenty of families do, and there are incredible family-friendly experiences all over the world.

But some vacations involve long flights, multiple destinations, early mornings, late nights, and the kind of flexibility that can be a little easier before kids.

If you're hoping to squeeze in a few big adventures before starting a family, these are five trips I'd put near the top of the list.

1. Japan: For the Ultimate Cultural Adventure

Japan is one of those destinations where there is so much to see that you could easily spend two weeks exploring and still feel like you missed things.

Tokyo offers endless neighborhoods, restaurants, shopping, and attractions, while Kyoto provides a completely different experience with its traditional temples, gardens, and historic streets.

You can also incorporate destinations like Osaka, Hakone, or the Japanese Alps depending on how much time you have.

Why visit before kids?

Japan can involve incredibly long sightseeing days, lots of walking, smaller hotel rooms, and moving between multiple cities.

It's the perfect place to embrace a packed itinerary, eat wherever looks interesting, stay out late, and explore without worrying too much about your schedule.

My recommendation: Aim for at least 10–14 days if you want to experience several destinations.

2. Thailand: For Beaches, Culture, and Adventure

Thailand is one of my favorite recommendations for a big international trip because it combines so many different experiences.

Start in Bangkok for temples, markets, incredible food, and city life.

Then head north to Chiang Mai for culture, unique accommodations, and beautiful scenery.

Finally, spend several days in southern Thailand enjoying the beaches of Phuket, Krabi, or one of the surrounding islands.

Why visit before kids?

Thailand is a destination where moving around is part of the adventure.

You might take several flights, boat transfers, and day trips throughout your vacation.

It's also a great opportunity to stay in romantic boutique hotels, spend entire days exploring, and enjoy spontaneous experiences.

My recommendation: Give yourself at least two weeks if you're planning to visit northern and southern Thailand.

3. Dubai and the Maldives: For a Luxury Adventure

If you're looking for a trip that combines excitement with complete relaxation, Dubai and the Maldives make an incredible pairing.

Spend several days in Dubai exploring the city's architecture, restaurants, shopping, desert landscapes, and luxury hotels.

Then fly to the Maldives for a completely different experience.

Imagine going from rooftop restaurants and city sightseeing to waking up in an overwater bungalow surrounded by turquoise water.

Why visit before kids?

It's an amazing opportunity to combine a busy city itinerary with a romantic resort vacation.

The Maldives is especially appealing when you can spend time relaxing, enjoying your villa, and doing absolutely nothing.

My recommendation: Spend three or four nights in Dubai and five to seven nights in the Maldives.

4. African Safari: For a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

An African safari is one of those trips that feels truly unforgettable.

Whether you choose Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, or South Africa, experiencing wildlife in its natural habitat is completely different from a traditional vacation.

Imagine staying at a beautiful safari lodge, waking up for sunrise game drives, enjoying meals overlooking the landscape, and seeing incredible animals in the wild.

Why visit before kids?

Safari itineraries can involve early mornings, small aircraft, remote locations, and long drives.

Some luxury safari lodges also have minimum age requirements for children, which can limit your accommodation options when traveling as a family.

Of course, family safaris can be wonderful, but a couples' safari allows you to choose your experience without as many restrictions.

My recommendation: Combine your safari with Cape Town, wine country, or a relaxing beach destination if you have enough time.

5. Italy: For the Ultimate Multi-Destination Vacation

Italy is one of those places where it's tempting to visit absolutely everywhere.

You could spend time exploring Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Venice, the Amalfi Coast, or Lake Como and still have dozens of places left on your list.

One of the best things about Italy is the ability to travel between cities and experience completely different atmospheres.

Spend your mornings exploring historic sites, afternoons enjoying wine or wandering through towns, and evenings having long Italian dinners.

Why visit before kids?

Italy is perfect for a trip built around walking, exploring, late dinners, and moving between several destinations.

There's something wonderful about being able to spend an entire afternoon getting lost in a city without needing to follow a strict schedule.

My recommendation: Choose two or three regions and give yourself enough time to enjoy them rather than trying to see the entire country in one trip.

Why These Trips Are Worth Prioritizing

I don't believe your travel adventures have to stop when you have children.

But I do think there is something special about taking advantage of the flexibility you have during different stages of life.

Whether it's spending two weeks exploring Japan, island hopping around Thailand, or finally booking that dream safari, these are experiences worth making time for.

And who knows? You might love one of these destinations so much that you end up returning with your family someday.
