The Best Places to Travel From NYC Without a Crazy Flight

One of my favorite things about living near New York City is how many incredible destinations are just a relatively short flight away.

As much as I love planning big international vacations, sometimes you just want to get away for a few days without spending an entire day traveling.

Luckily, there are plenty of beautiful beach destinations, charming cities, and even European destinations that are surprisingly accessible from NYC.

Whether you're planning a long weekend, romantic getaway, or a quick tropical vacation, here are some of the best places to consider.

Flight times below are approximate nonstop times from NYC-area airports. Actual schedules and nonstop availability vary by airline and season.

Bermuda — Approximately 2 Hours

Bermuda is one of the easiest island escapes from New York.

In just a couple of hours, you can go from the busy city to beautiful beaches, turquoise water, and charming island towns.

Bermuda is especially appealing for a long weekend because you don't need to spend much time traveling.

Just keep in mind that Bermuda has a cooler climate than many Caribbean destinations, so it's best to plan your trip during the warmer months if beach days are your priority.

Best for: Long weekends, couples, and relaxing beach vacations.

Puerto Rico — Approximately 4 Hours

Puerto Rico is one of my favorite recommendations for a tropical getaway from NYC.

You get beautiful beaches, colorful architecture, incredible food, and plenty of activities without needing an especially long flight.

Spend time exploring Old San Juan, enjoy the beaches, or venture out to experience the island's rainforest and beautiful coastline.

Another major perk? U.S. citizens don't need a passport to travel directly between the mainland United States and Puerto Rico.

Best for: Couples, girls' trips, and tropical vacations with sightseeing.

The Bahamas — Approximately 3 Hours

If you're looking for turquoise water and a relaxing beach vacation, the Bahamas is a fantastic option.

Nassau is particularly accessible from New York and offers a wide range of hotels and resorts.

You can spend a few days enjoying the beach or turn the trip into something bigger by exploring the outer islands.

Best for: Beach lovers, families, and short tropical getaways.

Turks & Caicos — Approximately 3.5–4 Hours

Turks & Caicos is one of the best options when your main priority is a gorgeous beach.

Grace Bay is known for its soft white sand and beautiful turquoise water.

There are plenty of luxury resorts, wonderful restaurants, and opportunities for snorkeling and boat excursions.

It's particularly appealing for a four- or five-night vacation when you want to relax without spending too much time getting there.

Best for: Couples, luxury vacations, and beach lovers.

Aruba — Approximately 4.5–5 Hours

Aruba is another great Caribbean destination from NYC.

The island offers beautiful beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and plenty of resorts to choose from.

It's especially appealing for travelers who want sunshine and beach days with enough activities to stay entertained.

Best for: Couples, families, and warm-weather vacations.

Antigua — Approximately 4–4.5 Hours

Antigua is a beautiful Caribbean destination for travelers who want relaxing beach days and romantic hotels.

The island is known for its many beaches, picturesque bays, and gorgeous coastal scenery.

You can spend your vacation at a luxurious resort or explore different parts of the island.

Best for: Romantic getaways, anniversaries, and relaxing Caribbean vacations.

Miami and Palm Beach, Florida — Approximately 3 Hours

Sometimes you don't need to leave the country to have a great vacation.

Miami is perfect when you want beaches, nightlife, and restaurants.

Palm Beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere with beautiful hotels, shopping, and upscale dining.

Both are great options for a quick escape from colder New York weather.

Best for: Girls' trips, birthdays, and long weekends.

Charleston, South Carolina — Approximately 2–2.5 Hours

Charleston is one of the best destinations for a weekend getaway focused on food, sightseeing, and exploring.

The city is known for beautiful historic streets, colorful buildings, rooftop bars, and excellent restaurants.

It's especially appealing when you want a destination where you can spend most of your time wandering around rather than planning major excursions.

Best for: Couples, girls' weekends, and food lovers.

Montreal, Canada — Approximately 1.5 Hours

Montreal is a fantastic option when you want an international-feeling getaway without a long flight.

The city's French influence, beautiful architecture, cafés, and restaurant scene create a unique atmosphere.

Spend your weekend exploring Old Montreal, enjoying incredible food, and wandering through different neighborhoods.

Best for: Food lovers, couples, and city breaks.

London, England — Approximately 7 Hours

London might seem like an unusual addition to a list of destinations without crazy flight times, but hear me out.

A nonstop flight from NYC is relatively manageable compared with many other international destinations.

With overnight flights available, you can leave New York in the evening and arrive in London the following morning.

That makes London surprisingly accessible for a five- to seven-day vacation.

Between the restaurants, shopping, historic landmarks, beautiful neighborhoods, and day-trip opportunities, there's plenty to do.

Best for: Longer weekends, international city breaks, and sightseeing.

Iceland — Approximately 5.5–6 Hours

Iceland is one of those destinations that feels incredibly far away despite being relatively close to New York.

The country is known for waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal hot springs, black-sand beaches, and dramatic landscapes.

It's perfect for travelers who love outdoor adventures and unique scenery.

You can experience some highlights on a shorter trip or plan a longer road trip around the country.

Best for: Adventure lovers, couples, and nature enthusiasts.

How to Choose the Right Destination for a Short Trip

When I'm planning a shorter vacation, I always look at more than just the flight time.

A three-hour flight doesn't necessarily mean a destination is convenient if you need another two-hour drive or ferry ride after landing.

I recommend researching the total travel time from your home to your hotel, including airport transfers.

For a three-night trip, I'd prioritize destinations with nonstop flights and convenient transportation.

For a longer vacation, I'm more willing to spend additional time traveling.

The biggest thing I've learned is that you don't need to fly halfway around the world to experience an amazing vacation.

Sometimes the perfect getaway is only a few hours from home.
